The trumpet, an instrument in the woodwind or brass group, is usually composed of brass or bronze and has: a mouthpiece, a horn, a spit valve, and keys. This instrument is said to be fully chromatic because it consists of three different buttons for tone manipulation. Some can also have a trigger line to fix any awkward sounds generated by the use of the three main keys. This line can be pulled while the musician is playing and the effect is so slight that the audience would not notice. The spit valve is helpful for releasing any mucus that has made its way into the trumpet. The history of this instrument is rather astonishing and these instruments go long back in time; as far in history as 2000 B.C.

The sound of this instrument are created by the collision, inclusion, or synthesis of the three finger controls. The sound produced is made from the vibration of the lips via the mouthpiece and then further tweaked by the finger controls before the sound reaches the bell, or end, of the trumpet. The development of combinations of air manipulation became fundamentally important to the development of specific brands of music. Because the buttons can be adjusted to any tone, all brands of music can include a trumpet sometimes.

The trumpet by nature, is pitched soprano style. This means, the chromatic range of pitches produced are from F sharp and back to C - before the clef controls air for treble affects. Though, the broad range of options for trumpets are not only in F sharp and C; some belt out notes in the G and high C array.

Trumpets, like other instruments, come in many styles and kinds. Some are preferred over others. In addition, and because of the variation they vary widely by cost. And, some have other features for pitching that do not come standard. A few of the more common types of trumpets are:

The use of trumpets goes as far back as 2000 B.C. where played in the bands in religious service. The first types of trumpets included objects to create sound, like: a piece of bamboo, or antler, or bone. The Christian bible has many references to these instruments and they were pulled from in the casket of the well-known Egyptian King, Tutankhamen. From the 14th century, manufacturers introduced the folded trumpet that is like trumpets of later times where the metal tubes are folded and turned from horn to mouthpiece. The first trumpet was merely straight and long with a bell on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. Then, in the days of opera, the trumpet was put to use in 1607 during a well-known Opera titled Orfeo. In time, trumpets were sounded to send military communications but were later developed to play music. In the 19th century, the trumpet became an important instrument for symphony orchestras. Today, the trumpet can be seen in jazz bands, military groups, marching groups, and sometimes rock bands.
