It does not matter how good your acting skills are. Unless you are the child of someone already in the business, in order to get into auditions you will need an agent. No matter how many of your movies are on the shelves at Netflicks, you will have started out just the same as everyone else, by finding an agent. Selecting an agent is important because they all have their specialties and you do not want one that specializes in commercials if you want to do films. Stay clear of the agents who advertise and listen to the gossip because the best agents are only word of mouth.

Take the time to analyze the situation. Would you like to be a non-union or a union actor? Do you want to be on the television, in commercials or even on the big screen? When you are ready for an agent, knowing these things will help you find the right one for your needs. You definitely do not want to be auditioning for commercials when y anted to be on television.

Finding a good agent is no easy task no matter how you look at it, because if it were easy then there would never be starving actors out there working in bars and restaurants. There may be some that will actually advertise, but most; especially the good ones do not which makes finding one even harder. Probably one of the best resources for finding an agent is through the Screen Actors Guild as they keep a list of all those agents which are affiliated with them.

One of the best ways for finding the right agent is in fact contacting the Screen Actors Guild. These affiliated agents are bound to follow by the same ethical practices as all of the members of the guild and it is quite simply a union. Making sure you choose the right agent at this point is extremely important, don’t forget what I was telling you about the Netflix rental ‘rule’ earlier on in this article. These agents also will not perform unscrupulous tasks in the act of promoting you to the directors nor will they treat you out of sorts either.

Once you have this list of agents that you received from the Screen Actors Guild that specialize in the type of acting you would like to do, then you will need to take a headshot as well as a resume and send each one on the list a copy. The ones who get back to you, you will be able to interview them to determine who is right for you.

Most importantly though, take your time and do not rush in to the first agent you meet. Interview several of them and then you can choose the best one for your situation. Pay attention to the types of work they specialize in as well as their list of both contacts as well as actors. The longer the list the less personal the agent will be.
