Achieving the goal of a website requires you follow a few basic rules. Make sure you follow these rules carefully.

1)Splash pages should not be used

Splash pages are often the first pages you see when you arrive at a website. They may have a very beautiful image with words like “welcome” or “click here to enter”. Do not give your visitors a reason to immediately click on the “back” button! Show them the value of your site up front without the splash page.

2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements

Most surfers ignore banner ads because they are so prevalent on the internet. A more effective approach to advertising is to include links in the body of your articles. Your words should entice them to seek more information and lead them to make the decision to click on your well placed links.

3) Your menu system should be easy to use

A simple, straightforward navigation menu system is essential. Avoid complicated flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don’t know how to navigate your pages, they will leave your site.

4) Let your visitor know where they are

It is easy to get lost on any website unless there are sign posts to guide one along the way. Make sure your guests know which part of your site they are in on every page. Don’t let them get lost or confused because confusion means “abandon ship”!

5) Use audio and video on your site carefully

Give the visitor the option of listen to any sound or watching the videos on your site. They want to be in control of what they see and hear and may resent any attempt to force them to listen or watch unwanted media. The exit is only a click away and they are more than willing to leave your site for another.
